A D2C brand is a brand that sells its own products straight to shoppers, with no distributor or retailer in between. It usually sells from its own website or app. D2C stands for direct to consumer. D2C brands in India sell beauty, fashion, food, electronics, home goods and more this way.

This guide explains the term and compares D2C with marketplaces and retail stores. It then gives 22 examples of D2C brands in India, in 8 categories. We opened each brand's own website on 7 October 2026. The list is alphabetical and is not a ranking.

The last sections cover how shoppers find these brands, including through AI assistants such as ChatGPT. They also show how a brand can check whether it is named. This page is part of our guide to AI in ecommerce.

What is a D2C brand? Meaning and full form

A D2C brand sells its own products to the shopper itself. The meaning is in the full form: direct to consumer, also written DTC. The brand takes the order, takes the payment and sends the parcel.

The older route is wholesale. The brand sells to a distributor, the distributor to a shop, and the shop to the shopper. D2C removes those middle steps.

Some D2C brands also run their own physical stores. The label describes how a brand sells, not what it sells or how large it is.

How is D2C different from selling on marketplaces or in retail stores?

The difference is who stands between the brand and the shopper. In D2C, nobody does. On a marketplace, the marketplace does. In a retail store, the retailer does. A marketplace is a website where many sellers list products, such as Amazon or Flipkart.

Can a D2C brand sell on marketplaces too?

Yes. The three routes are not exclusive. A brand can sell on its own site and on marketplaces at the same time, and many D2C brands in India do.

Four brands in the list below name other shopping sites or apps on their own sites: Atomberg, Kapiva, Mother Sparsh and Sleepy Owl, all checked 7 Oct 2026. Several others link to a store finder or a stores page.

Examples of D2C brands in India, by category

Here are 22 examples of D2C brands in India, in 8 categories. Each sells from its own website, and each line states only what that site showed on 7 October 2026.

Categories are in alphabetical order, and so are the brands inside each one. People often search for the top D2C brands in India. This list is not a ranking, because we have measured nothing that would justify an order.

It is also a sample. Many D2C brands are missing, and a place on the list says nothing about size or quality.

How big is the D2C market in India?

Estimates differ, even on one page. IBEF says India's D2C market is projected to grow at a compound rate of 40% a year and reach US$ 60 billion by 2030. The same page says the D2C market is set to cross ₹8,70,500 crore (US$ 100 billion) in 2025 (IBEF e-commerce page, last updated September 2026, checked 7 Oct 2026).

The two figures do not agree, so quote either one with its source and its date.

IBEF (India Brand Equity Foundation) is a trust set up by the Department of Commerce of the Government of India (IBEF, checked 7 Oct 2026).

How do shoppers find D2C brands now?

Shoppers reach a D2C brand by four routes: search engines, marketplaces, social media and AI assistants. An AI assistant is a chat tool, such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, that writes an answer in place of a list of links.

  • Search. The shopper types a need into Google and sees brand sites, marketplaces and review pages together. Some searches also show an AI Overview, Google's AI-written summary. See our ecommerce SEO guide.
  • Marketplaces. The shopper searches inside a marketplace, where the brand's listing sits next to rival listings.
  • Social media. The shopper sees the brand in a video, a post or a review, then looks it up. Our D2C marketing guide covers these channels.
  • AI assistants. The shopper asks what to buy. The answer names a few brands and usually links to its sources. ChatGPT can also show products as cards. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping is live for users in the US and will expand to more regions. India is not named (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). Our ChatGPT shopping guide has the detail.

youtube.com drew 534 of 4,640 citations in 480 AI shopping answers collected in India. reddit.com drew 191, nykaa.com 176 and magicpin.in 133. (Depra AI Hinglish vs English study, fieldwork 14 Aug 2026)

What AI answers cite, and what that means for a D2C brand

Those numbers come from Depra AI's Hinglish vs English AI shopping study. Hinglish is Hindi and English typed in English letters. The study collected its 480 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity on 14 August 2026. A citation is a link an answer gives as its source.

The two most cited sites were a video site and a forum, and no brand controls either. So the sites AI answers cite are often not the brand's own site. Video reviews, forum threads and store listings count alongside the product page.

The study covers two categories on one day, so check your own category too.

What decides whether an AI assistant names a D2C brand?

Three things can be checked from outside: site access, presence on the cited pages, and the wording of the question. None of them guarantees a mention.

Our page on why ChatGPT does not mention your brand lists five causes, with a test for each. The steps are in how to get ChatGPT to recommend your brand.

  • Access to your site. OpenAI says a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler documentation, checked 7 Oct 2026). OAI-SearchBot is OpenAI's crawler, the bot that reads web pages for ChatGPT search.
  • Presence on the cited pages. An assistant that searches the web builds its answer from the pages it picks. A brand those pages leave out is easy to miss.
  • The question itself. The study above asked each question several times, in English and in Hinglish. The brands and sources changed between runs and between the two languages.

How can a D2C brand check its own AI visibility?

Ask your shoppers' buying questions in each AI assistant and note which brands the answers name. AI visibility is the share of answers that name your brand. A first pass by hand takes about 15 minutes.

  • Step 1. Write the questions. List 5 buying questions for your category that do not name your brand. One example: "which face wash should I buy for oily skin under ₹500".
  • Step 2. Start a fresh session. Use a private window, logged out where the app allows it, so your history does not shape the answer.
  • Step 3. Ask all four. Put each question once to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. On Google, note whether an AI Overview appears above the links.
  • Step 4. Note who is named. Write down the brands in each answer, their order and the sites cited. In ChatGPT, note any product cards too.
  • Step 5. Repeat. Run the same pass on another day, because answers change between runs. Then count how often you appear.

When to move from a spreadsheet to tracking

A manual check suits a handful of questions, and our AI visibility checker page has the full method. For daily checks on every engine, use a tracking tool. Our roundup of the best AI visibility tools for D2C brands compares 9 of them.

What does Depra AI track for a D2C brand, and what does it not do?

Depra AI is AI visibility tracking software for brands in India. It asks your buying questions to four AI engines from inside the country you sell in, and stores every full answer.

  • Brand mentions on four engines: ChatGPT with web search, Gemini and Google AI Overviews are checked daily, and Perplexity weekly, in English and Hinglish. You see how often each one names you and your competitors, in what position and tone. See AI visibility tracking.
  • Product prompts: track a buying question (a prompt) for one product. Depra AI records whether each answer names that product, a rival's product or neither.
  • The products ChatGPT shows: Depra AI records products whenever ChatGPT shows them in a tracked answer. Its Shopping report lists the brands, products and stores. Only ChatGPT returns products. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping is live in the US today and will expand (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). So a brand that tracks questions for India may see few or no products in its Shopping report until ChatGPT shows products there. See product visibility.
  • The marketplaces and sites cited: every cited website is labelled by type, and marketplace is one type. Marketplace intelligence shows which marketplaces AI answers cite in your category.
  • Your own store: Depra AI reads your store's product list, so it knows which products are yours. See Depra AI for Shopify.

What Depra AI does not do

Depra AI is software, not an agency. It does not write content, edit your website, change your store or guarantee a mention. It does not track search rankings, sales or ads inside a marketplace. It offers no AI referral traffic or sales attribution, so it does not show visits or sales that come from AI answers. It has no free plan.

Plans start at ₹1,999 a month plus GST. See Depra AI pricing.

Frequently asked

What are D2C brands?

D2C brands are brands that sell their own products straight to shoppers, usually from their own website or app. D2C stands for direct to consumer. No distributor or retailer sits in between, so the brand owns the customer relationship.

What are some examples of D2C brands in India?

One from each of our 8 categories, the first alphabetically: Mother Sparsh, Dot & Key, boAt, ClearDekho, Bewakoof, Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters, Kapiva and Atomberg. Each sells from its own website, which we opened on 7 October 2026. The examples section of this page lists all 22, with a source link for each. It is not a ranking.

What is the difference between D2C and B2C?

B2C means business to consumer: any business that sells to individual shoppers, including retailers and marketplaces. D2C is one kind of B2C. In D2C the brand that owns the product is also the seller, on its own site or app.

Is a brand that sells on Amazon still a D2C brand?

Yes, as the term is commonly used. The label says the brand sells direct from its own site, not that it sells nowhere else. Kapiva, for example, says on its own site that its products are also available on Amazon and Flipkart (Kapiva, checked 7 Oct 2026). A sale made on Amazon is still a marketplace sale.

What are some D2C beverage brands in India?

Two coffee examples from our list are Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters and Sleepy Owl. Both sell coffee from their own sites (Blue Tokai and Sleepy Owl, checked 7 Oct 2026). They are examples, not a ranking.

How do D2C brands market themselves?

A D2C brand has no retailer to bring it shoppers, so it finds them itself. The usual channels are paid social ads, marketplaces, search, creators, WhatsApp and email, and quick commerce apps that deliver within minutes. The newest is being named in AI answers. Our D2C marketing guide covers all seven.
