Agentic commerce is shopping in which an AI assistant, called an agent, finds, compares and, with the buyer's permission, buys products on the buyer's behalf. For a Shopify store or consumer brand, two things matter first: whether these assistants can read your products, and whether they recommend them.
The building blocks exist, but they are uneven. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping is live for users in the US and will expand to more regions. India is not named (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). For checkout by an agent in India, we found only pilots. For the wider picture, read AI in ecommerce.
What is agentic commerce?
Agentic commerce is the use of AI agents to carry out parts of a purchase for a person: finding products, comparing them, filling the cart and paying. Stripe describes it as AI agents supporting transactions between buyers and sellers, and transacting for the people they serve (Stripe docs, checked 7 Oct 2026).
The term covers a range. At one end the agent only recommends, and the shopper pays on your store. At the other end the agent pays with a method the shopper approved in advance. ChatGPT sits near the first end today. Shopify calls its ChatGPT channel a discovery-focused referrer, with the purchase completed on the store's own checkout (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026).
How is agentic commerce different from ordinary online shopping?
In ordinary online shopping a person does every step: searching, comparing, adding to cart and paying. In agentic commerce the shopper states a need in plain words, and an assistant does some or all of those steps.
For a brand, the biggest change is who reads the product page. Software works from text and data fields, so a detail that sits only in an image can be missed.
| Step | Ordinary online shopping | Agentic commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Finding products | The shopper types keywords into a search box | The shopper describes a need and gets a shortlist |
| Reading your page | A person looks at photos, copy and reviews | Software reads title, description, price, stock and policies |
| Paying | On your site or a marketplace | On your site, or in the assistant where in-chat checkout exists |
| What you measure | Rankings, clicks and conversions | Whether the assistant names your brand and shows your products |
What are the building blocks of agentic commerce today?
There are four kinds of building block: open protocols, assistants that show products, platforms that supply product data, and payment systems that let an agent pay. A protocol is a published set of rules that lets different companies' software work together.
| Piece | Who runs it | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) | OpenAI and Stripe | Open standard for purchases between a buyer, an AI agent and a business | Beta, with dated versions up to 2026-04-17 (ACP on GitHub) |
| ChatGPT shopping | OpenAI | Shows products inside ChatGPT answers | Live for users in the US, to expand to more regions. India is not named (OpenAI merchants page) |
| Instant Checkout in ChatGPT | OpenAI | A Buy button that completes an order in the chat | OpenAI's merchants page says it is moving away from standalone Instant Checkout (OpenAI merchants page), while its help article still mentions the option for some eligible products and merchants (OpenAI Help Center) |
| Agentic storefronts and Shopify Catalog | Shopify | Make a store's eligible products discoverable in AI channels such as ChatGPT and Gemini | Active by default for eligible stores (Shopify Help Center) |
| Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) | Google, Shopify and other co-developers (ucp.dev) | Open standard behind a checkout button in AI Mode in Google Search and Gemini | Select merchants, for products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia (Google Merchant Center Help) |
| Instant Buy in Perplexity | Perplexity and PayPal | Checkout inside Perplexity | Announced for US users on 25 Nov 2025 (PayPal newsroom) |
| Agentic Payments on UPI | Razorpay and NPCI, with OpenAI | UPI payment inside a ChatGPT conversation | Pilot, announced in October 2025 (Razorpay newsroom) |
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is an open standard for how a buyer, the buyer's AI agent and a business complete a purchase together (agenticcommerce.dev, checked 7 Oct 2026). OpenAI and Stripe maintain it under the open-source Apache 2.0 licence (ACP on GitHub, checked 7 Oct 2026).
OpenAI announced it on 29 Sep 2025, alongside Instant Checkout, a Buy button inside ChatGPT (OpenAI, checked 7 Oct 2026). Its developer docs describe three parts: product feeds, agentic checkout and delegated payment (OpenAI commerce docs, checked 7 Oct 2026). A product feed is a structured list of your products with prices and stock. Delegated payment passes the shopper's payment details to the merchant in a protected form. The same docs say OpenAI is not the merchant of record, meaning the legal seller (OpenAI commerce docs, checked 7 Oct 2026).
On 24 Mar 2026 OpenAI said it had expanded the protocol to support product discovery. It said the first Instant Checkout did not offer the flexibility it wanted, so merchants can use their own checkout (OpenAI, checked 7 Oct 2026).
OpenAI's merchants page says it is moving away from standalone Instant Checkout, with purchases completed on the merchant's own site or app (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026), while its help article still mentions an Instant Checkout option for some eligible products and merchants (OpenAI Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026). So OpenAI's pages disagree.
A small brand need not build ACP itself. OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogues are already integrated, with no extra setup or application (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026).
What has Shopify announced for agentic commerce?
Shopify's answer is agentic storefronts, which are active by default for eligible stores. Its help centre says they let customers discover and buy a store's products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Product data travels through Shopify Catalog. It shares each eligible product's title, description, options, images, price and availability with AI channels, and keeps stock and prices up to date (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Three sets of rules decide who takes part. Our ChatGPT shopping guide has the checklist, and our Shopify SEO guide covers product pages.
- Shopify Catalog. The store must be on the Starter plan or higher and not in private mode. Each product needs a title, an image, a price above zero and a product URL. It must not be Unlisted or hidden from search engines (Shopify Help Center, checked 8 Oct 2026).
- The ChatGPT channel. Shopify says the store must sell to customers in the United States, can be based outside the United States, and pays no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT (Shopify Help Center, checked 8 Oct 2026).
- Brands not on Shopify. Shopify says its Agentic plan lets a business on another platform add products to Shopify Catalog with no monthly subscription fee. Payment fees apply when a customer buys in an AI channel's Shopify-powered direct checkout (Shopify Help Center, checked 8 Oct 2026).
Is agentic commerce live in India?
Only in part. Google says shopping answers in AI Mode, the chat option in Google Search, and in the Gemini app work in India in English, with Gemini in Hindi too (Google India blog, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- OpenAI. OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping is live for users in the US and will expand to more regions. India is not named (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). ChatGPT Ads are a separate product, and OpenAI says they have launched in India (OpenAI, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Shopify. A store that sells only in India does not meet the ChatGPT channel's rule on US customers, set out above (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Google checkout. Checkout built on the Universal Commerce Protocol covers products eligible in the United States, Canada and Australia (Google Merchant Center Help, checked 7 Oct 2026). Flipkart is listed as an endorser of the protocol, which is not a launch (ucp.dev, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Payments in India. The Agentic Payments pilot that Razorpay, NPCI (which runs UPI) and OpenAI announced in October 2025 named BigBasket among its first merchants (Razorpay newsroom, checked 7 Oct 2026). Mastercard reported its first authenticated agentic commerce transaction in India in February 2026 (Mastercard, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Selling inside ChatGPT. A Razorpay post dated 11 Mar 2026 describes stores selling through apps inside ChatGPT, with payment by UPI or card, subject to ChatGPT's app approval (Razorpay blog, checked 7 Oct 2026).
What should a small brand do now?
Five jobs pay off whether or not agent checkout reaches your buyers soon.
- 1. Fix product data. Give every product a clear title, a price, live stock and a description that states what it is, who it is for and its size.
- 2. Keep feeds and structured data in order. Structured data is code on a product page that states price and stock in a standard format. Google says providing it together with a Merchant Center feed, the product list you send Google, maximises your eligibility (Google Search Central, checked 7 Oct 2026). OpenAI says a product feed is not required if ChatGPT already crawls your site, but a feed gives you more control over how your products appear (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). Its developer docs say feed onboarding is currently open to approved partners (OpenAI commerce docs, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- 3. Publish your policies. Shopify asks for a completed Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy before a store can sell on ChatGPT (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026). State delivery times and return rules in plain text too.
- 4. Let AI crawlers read the store. OpenAI says a site that opts out of OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler (a bot that fetches web pages), is not shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs, checked 7 Oct 2026). Check robots.txt, the file that tells bots what they may read, against our AI crawlers list or with Depra AI's AI crawler checker.
- 5. Check whether assistants recommend you. The next section shows how, and our guide to product visibility in AI search goes deeper.
How do you know whether AI assistants recommend your brand?
Ask the questions your buyers ask, more than once, because AI answers vary between runs.
Depra AI does this on a schedule. It asks your buying questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, the AI summaries on some Google results. It asks from inside the country you choose and stores every full answer. You see how often each engine names your brand and your competitors, and which websites the answers cite.
For ChatGPT, Depra AI also records the products shown as cards. Its Shopping report ranks brands by the share of shopping answers that show their products, and lists the stores that sell them. Only ChatGPT returns products. See product visibility.
OpenAI says ChatGPT shopping is live in the US today and will expand (OpenAI merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). So a brand that tracks questions for India may see few or no products in its Shopping report until ChatGPT shows products there. Depra AI records products whenever ChatGPT shows them in a tracked answer.
Depra AI offers no AI referral traffic or sales attribution, so it does not show visits or sales that come from AI answers. It never changes your store. A Shopify store needs no app and no access token to set up: see Depra AI for Shopify stores.
What is still uncertain?
Three things are not settled.
- When India is included. No vendor page we checked gives a date for ChatGPT shopping or agent checkout in India.
- Which standard lasts. Stripe's docs list both ACP and the Universal Commerce Protocol as options for selling through agents (Stripe docs, checked 7 Oct 2026). A Shopify store does not have to choose, because Shopify connects it to each AI channel (Shopify Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- How assistants rank products. OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads. It names factors such as price, reviews and availability, and we found no published formula (OpenAI Help Center, checked 7 Oct 2026). Measure over many answers, as our guide on how to measure AI visibility explains.
