Shopify SEO is the work of making your store easy for Google and AI assistants such as ChatGPT to find, read and recommend. Shopify handles the technical base for you. Your part is the content: titles, descriptions, collection and product copy, images, speed, links and a blog.
The technical base is four things. A sitemap lists your pages for search engines. A robots.txt file tells bots, the programs that read websites, what they may fetch. Canonical tags name the main address of a page. Structured data labels price and stock for search engines.
This guide covers SEO for a Shopify store in plain words, for owners in India who are not SEO specialists. Each Shopify, Google and OpenAI fact links to the page we read on 7 Oct 2026. For SEO beyond Shopify, read the ecommerce SEO guide.
What does Shopify handle for SEO, and what is left to you?
Shopify handles the technical base, and you handle the words, images and links. Its help centre says every store automatically gets a sitemap.xml file, a robots.txt file, canonical tags, title tags and an SSL security certificate. The certificate puts https in the store's address (Shopify Help Center, SEO overview, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Sitemap. It sits at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml, lists your products, collections, pages and blog posts, and updates when you add one (Shopify Help Center, sitemap, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- robots.txt. The default file at yourstore.com/robots.txt works for most stores, Shopify says. Changing it means adding a robots.txt.liquid template to your theme code (Shopify Help Center, robots.txt, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Canonical tags. Shopify adds them automatically, to keep duplicate content out of search results (Shopify Help Center, SEO overview, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Structured data. Shopify-supported themes and Theme Store themes include it by default, with price, availability and reviews on product pages (Shopify Help Center, sitemap, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- URLs. Shopify says store URLs use standard characters and a simple, readable structure (Shopify Help Center, site structure, checked 7 Oct 2026).
What Shopify leaves to you
For every product, collection, page and blog post you can edit three things. The title tag is the clickable headline in search results. The meta description is the short text under it. The third is the URL (Shopify Help Center, SEO overview, checked 7 Oct 2026). Images, menus, links, redirects and your blog are yours too.
How do you edit SEO on Shopify?
Open the product, collection, page or blog post in your Shopify admin and edit its search engine listing: page title, description and URL. Scroll to the Search engine listing section at the bottom of the editing screen and click its edit link. The homepage title and description are set in Online Store > Preferences (Shopify Help Center, adding keywords, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Shopify accepts up to 70 characters in a title and suggests 60, because search engines shorten longer ones. It recommends 160 characters for the description. Google can still rewrite both (Shopify Help Center, adding keywords, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Shopify SEO checklist: 10 jobs, in order
Work through these ten jobs in order. Shopify's guidance here comes from its help centre pages on adding keywords, site structure and the SEO overview, checked 7 Oct 2026.
- 1. Connect Google Search Console. It is a free Google service that shows how your store appears in Google Search (Google Search Console Help, checked 8 Oct 2026). In Search Console, add your store as a URL prefix property and pick the HTML tag method. Paste the tag into theme.liquid, the theme's layout file, just below the opening head tag. You reach it under Online Store > your theme > Edit code. Then open Sitemaps in Search Console and submit sitemap.xml. Remove the store password first, because Google cannot read a store in private mode (Shopify Help Center, sitemap, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- 2. Write titles and descriptions. Start with the homepage, main collections and best sellers. Put the phrase buyers search near the start of each title.
- 3. Treat collections as category pages. A collection can rank for a broad search such as "cotton kurta sets for women". Give each one a clear name and its own short description.
- 4. Fill in every product page. Add what buyers ask about: size, material and care. Shopify advises against copying the manufacturer's description and suggests at least 250 words of text.
- 5. Control duplicate URLs. Shopify's canonical tags and default robots.txt handle most of this. When you remove a product, redirect its old address to a live page. Go to Content > Menus and click View URL Redirects (Shopify Help Center, URL redirects, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- 6. Name images and write alt text. Rename image files before upload, because Shopify does not let you rename them later. Then add alt text, a plain written description of each image.
- 7. Watch your speed. Shopify tells store owners to monitor page speed in its built-in analytics. Open Online Store in your admin. The Themes page shows a summary of your store's three Core Web Vitals, Google's measures of loading, responsiveness and visual stability (Shopify Help Center, web performance reports, checked 7 Oct 2026). If pages feel slow, start with oversized images and unused apps.
- 8. Link your pages together. Shopify suggests a menu link for every page and, where possible, no page more than 3 clicks from the homepage. Write link text that names the target.
- 9. Answer buying questions in the blog. Link each post to the products it mentions. Shopify suggests at least 500 words for a blog post.
- 10. Check AI access. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser. Shopify creates both files for you. Then ask the AI assistants your buyers use, as the last section shows.
| Task | Where in Shopify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Submit your sitemap | Google Search Console > Sitemaps. The verification tag goes in theme.liquid | Helps Google find your pages |
| Titles and descriptions | Search engine listing of each product, collection, page and post. Homepage: Online Store > Preferences | Shoppers see this text in search results |
| Collection pages | The collection's title, description and search engine listing | Collections are your category pages |
| Product pages | Products > the product: title, description, media, search engine listing | Search engines and AI systems read these details |
| Duplicate URLs | Automatic: canonical tags and default robots.txt. By hand: Content > Menus > View URL Redirects | Keeps one address per page in search results |
| Images and alt text | Products > the product > click the image > Edit alt text | Search engines cannot read images without it |
| Speed | Online Store > Themes: the web performance summary | Slow pages lose shoppers |
| Internal links | Content > Menus, plus links in descriptions and blog posts | Shows search engines how pages relate |
| Blog | Your blog posts, each with its own search engine listing | Answers questions shoppers ask before buying |
| AI access | yourstore.com/robots.txt and yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser | Shows which crawlers your store lets in and what Shopify tells AI agents |
How do product structured data and Google Merchant listings work on Shopify?
Shopify themes add product structured data for you, and Google reads price, stock and reviews from it. Google says pages with this markup can show price, availability, ratings and shipping in search results (Google Search Central, product structured data, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Google describes two kinds. Product snippets are for pages where people cannot buy, such as a review. Merchant listings are for pages where customers buy from you, which means your product pages.
- Required fields. A merchant listing needs the product name, an image and an offer with a price above zero and a currency code such as INR (Google Search Central, merchant listing, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- One product per page. Google supports the markup on pages about a single product or its variants, and recommends product pages over category pages (Google Search Central, merchant listing, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- A feed as well. You can also send a product feed, a file listing your products, to Google Merchant Center and opt into free listings. Google says doing both maximises eligibility. On Shopify, the Google & YouTube sales channel syncs your products with Merchant Center. Shopify says the channel is available only for certain countries and currencies (Shopify Help Center, Google & YouTube, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Check it. Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test. Test again after installing one of the best Shopify SEO apps or a reviews app, because apps can add their own markup.
Which AI crawlers does a Shopify store let in by default?
Shopify's help centre names no AI crawler in its account of the default robots.txt. It lists the key rules. Allow: / lets crawlers request your public pages. Disallow rules cover admin, cart, checkout, account and order pages, plus filtered and sorted collection pages (Shopify Help Center, robots.txt, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Shopify also says search engines and large language models (LLMs) can index a store, meaning read and store its pages (Shopify Help Center, crawling your store, checked 7 Oct 2026). LLMs are the AI behind tools like ChatGPT. So the documented default is open. A theme with its own robots.txt.liquid template can still carry older or custom rules.
Blocking has a cost. OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot, its search crawler, are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, its training crawler, is a separate setting (OpenAI crawler documentation, checked 7 Oct 2026). For Google, Googlebot rules control its AI features in Search (Google Search Central, AI features, checked 7 Oct 2026).
One route skips robots.txt. Shopify has a name for selling through AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot: agentic storefronts. For stores that use them, Shopify Catalog sends product data to those channels whatever robots.txt says (Shopify Help Center, robots.txt, checked 7 Oct 2026). Shopify says the ChatGPT channel is on by default for eligible stores. One requirement is that the store sells to customers in the United States, though it can be based elsewhere. You manage the channel in Sales channels > Agentic (Shopify Help Center, selling on ChatGPT, checked 7 Oct 2026). See our ChatGPT shopping guide.
How to check your own robots.txt
- 1. Open yourstore.com/robots.txt. Search the page for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and the other names in our AI crawlers list.
- 2. Read the rule that applies. A bot follows the rules under its own User-agent line if it has one, and those under User-agent: * if not. Disallow: / there blocks the whole store.
- 3. Leave edits to a developer. Shopify Support does not help with robots.txt.liquid changes, and Shopify warns that a mistake can cost you all your traffic. To go back to the default file, delete the robots.txt.liquid template under Online Store > your theme > Edit code (Shopify Help Center, robots.txt, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Does a Shopify store need an llms.txt file?
Not one you write yourself. llms.txt is a plain text file at yourstore.com/llms.txt that describes a site to AI tools. Shopify's developer documentation says Shopify manages it for a store by default. The file mirrors /agents.md, its main description of a store for AI agents (Shopify developer documentation, llms.txt.liquid, checked 7 Oct 2026). Open yourstore.com/llms.txt in a browser to see yours.
Shopify says the managed file is all most stores need. It recommends writing your own llms.txt.liquid template only for an advanced need, because you then keep it current yourself (Shopify developer documentation, llms.txt.liquid, checked 7 Oct 2026).
Do not expect the file to lift Google results. Google says you need no new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in its AI features (Google Search Central, AI features, checked 7 Oct 2026). Those are AI Overviews, the summaries above the results, and AI Mode, its chat-style search. Our llms.txt guide has more.
How do AI assistants choose which stores and products to show?
They choose from what they can reach and read. A Shopify store has three routes into an AI answer: its own pages, its product data, and what other websites say about it.
- Your pages. Google says a page must be indexed to be linked in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It must also be able to show a snippet, the preview text under a result. Google sets no extra technical requirements (Google Search Central, AI features, checked 7 Oct 2026). Every site also has a Search generative AI control in Search Console, under Settings. Sites are included by default, and a site its owner excludes does not appear in these features (Google Search Console Help, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Your product data. Google lists up-to-date Merchant Center information among its best practices for AI features (Google Search Central, AI features, checked 7 Oct 2026). For merchants on Shopify, OpenAI says product data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no additional work required from individual merchants (OpenAI help centre, checked 7 Oct 2026). OpenAI says shopping in ChatGPT is live for users in the US today and will expand to more regions (OpenAI's merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026).
- Other websites. AI answers also cite pages you do not own, such as videos, forum threads and marketplace listings.
In 480 AI shopping answers collected in India, youtube.com was cited 534 times, reddit.com 191 times and nykaa.com 176 times, out of 4,640 citations. (Depra AI Hinglish vs English AI shopping study, fieldwork 14 Aug 2026)
What Shopify suggests for product pages
Shopify advises complete product pages for AI: detailed specifications, comparisons with similar products, structured data, and sizing, material and care details. Its free Knowledge Base app, available on all Shopify plans, lets you view and customise the FAQs that AI shopping agents use to answer questions about your store (Shopify Help Center, optimizing your store for AI, checked 8 Oct 2026).
How do you check whether AI assistants recommend your store?
Ask them your buyers' questions, more than once, and record which stores and products each answer names. For Google, Search Console also has a Generative AI performance report. It shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device (Google Search Console Help, checked 7 Oct 2026). It counts your own links only, so you still need to read the answers to see which brands they name.
- 1. Write 10 buying questions. Use a shopper's words and a budget, such as "best cotton kurta sets under ₹2,000". Leave your brand name out.
- 2. Ask each assistant. Put every question to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and note whether Google shows an AI Overview. Use a private browser window, so your own history stays out of the answer.
- 3. Record what you see. Note whether your store is named, where it sits in the list, which products appear as cards and which websites are cited.
- 4. Repeat on other days. Answers change from one run to the next, so one try is not a measurement. See how to measure AI visibility.
Running the check on a schedule with Depra AI
Depra AI asks your buying questions to ChatGPT with web search, Gemini and Google AI Overviews daily and to Perplexity weekly, from inside India. Questions can be in English or Hinglish, which is Hindi and English typed in English letters. It stores every full answer and shows how often each engine names you and your competitors, and which websites it cites.
For a store, it records the products ChatGPT showed as cards and the merchants that sell them. OpenAI says shopping in ChatGPT is live for users in the US today and will expand to more regions (OpenAI's merchants page, checked 7 Oct 2026). If you track questions for India, your Shopping report may show few or no products until ChatGPT shows products there. Depra AI records products whenever ChatGPT shows them in a tracked answer. See product visibility and AI visibility for Shopify stores. Setup needs no Shopify app and no access token.
It does not change your store, write content or run a technical site audit. Its AI crawler checker shows which of 41 AI crawlers your robots.txt allows or blocks. Plans start at ₹1,999 a month plus GST. Compare trackers in the best AI visibility tools for Shopify.
