Prompt volume is an estimate of how often people ask AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, about a topic in a month. A prompt is the question a person types into an AI assistant. No tool we checked counts every time a full question is asked. Each one works from a sample, a model or a related signal, such as consumer panels, search trends or keyword demand.
The full record of what people ask sits with the companies that run the assistants. Tools outside them estimate. Semrush’s help centre says individual prompts are "often too specific and unique to measure directly" (Semrush, AI visibility data, checked 15 Oct 2026).
This guide covers what prompt volume data means, how four providers build it, how Depra AI shows it, and how to use it.
What is prompt volume in AI visibility and SEO?
Prompt volume is the AI version of search volume. Search volume is the average number of times a keyword is searched on Google in a month. Prompt volume tries to give a similar number for questions asked to AI assistants. In AI visibility work, it helps you decide which questions to track first. AI visibility is the share of AI answers to your buyers’ questions that name your brand.
The two numbers are built in different ways. DataForSEO, a data provider, notes that classic search volume comes from Google Ads keyword data and is based on queries. Its AI search volume is based on questions (DataForSEO, AI search volume, checked 15 Oct 2026).
People also write to AI differently. Profound says questions to answer engines are usually longer and contain follow-ups (Profound, Prompt Volumes, checked 15 Oct 2026). A three-word keyword and a three-sentence chat are hard to compare.
Why can’t anyone see how often a full question is asked in ChatGPT?
Only the company that runs an AI assistant sees every conversation. Outside tools work from samples and signals, so they can estimate demand but not count each full question. Four things make a count hard:
- Questions are long and unique: two people rarely type the same sentence. For this reason, Semrush calculates volume for topics, not single prompts (Semrush, AI visibility data, checked 15 Oct 2026).
- Chats have follow-ups: a buyer may ask a broad question, then narrow it with a budget or a city.
- Panels are samples: Profound licenses conversations from double opt-in consumer panels, people who agreed to share their use. It applies statistical modelling to correct for demographic and geographic bias (Profound, Prompt Volumes, checked 15 Oct 2026). A sample is useful, but it is not every user.
- Your own reports mix AI with search: Google counts traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in overall search traffic. Search Console reports it under the "Web" search type (Google Search Central, checked 15 Oct 2026). So there is no separate count of AI questions there.
How do tools estimate prompt volumes?
Each provider builds its number in its own way, so figures from different tools are not on one scale. The table sets out what four providers say about their own data, and how Depra AI shows it.
For tool-by-tool comparisons, see Depra AI vs Profound, Depra AI vs Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit and Depra AI vs Peec AI.
| Provider and feature | What it shows | Where the data comes from | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Profound, Prompt Volumes | Keyword volumes, topic trends and intent, filtered by platform, age range or income | Double opt-in consumer panels of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity users, with statistical modelling | Lists 10 countries; India is not one. Updated weekly. |
| Semrush, Prompt Research | AI Volume: estimated search queries a topic gets on a selected AI platform, with intent labels | Third-party data on real AI interactions plus Semrush’s machine learning models; 317M+ AI queries | Volume is for topics, not single prompts. |
| Peec AI, Prompt Volume | A score from 1 to 5 for each prompt, relative to your industry | Search engine trends, AI conversation data and other industry signals | A relative score, not a count. |
| DataForSEO, AI search volume | How often a keyword is used in questions people may ask AI tools, with a 12-month trend | A proprietary model using several signals, including Google’s People Also Ask data | A phrase counts only questions that contain all its words. |
| Depra AI, Volume column | Measured monthly AI keyword demand, where data is available | DataForSEO, measured on a short English term or a broader category term | A proxy, not a count of the full sentence. |
Is there a prompt volume checker for ChatGPT?
None of the tools we read counts how often a full question is asked in ChatGPT. They estimate demand for a topic, a keyword or a prompt, each on its own scale.
Some estimates separate the engines. Profound filters by platform, and Semrush shows AI Volume for a selected AI platform (Profound, Prompt Volumes, Semrush, Prompt Research, checked 15 Oct 2026). The DataForSEO page we read does not split its figure by engine (DataForSEO, AI search volume, checked 15 Oct 2026).
A volume figure tells you how much interest a topic may have. Only the answer tells you whether ChatGPT names your brand. To see that, run the free AI audit: 5 buyer questions on 4 AI engines, with no signup.
How does Depra AI show prompt volume?
Depra AI shows prompt volume in a Volume column, where data is available. The number is measured monthly AI keyword demand from DataForSEO. Depra AI measures a short English term from the prompt, or a broader category term when needed. It is a proxy, a stand-in measure, for demand around the question.
It is not a count of how often people ask the full sentence. A prompt tracked in Hinglish uses demand measured on the English term. Hinglish is Hindi and English typed in English letters, and tracking it is Depra AI’s speciality (Hinglish AI visibility).
- The bars: show the demand level. The tooltip names the measured term, the market and the month.
- Not measured yet: there is no measurement to show yet.
- Not measured in a country: that market is not supported for volume.
- No measured demand: the measured term returned zero.
- What none of these means: that nobody asks your full question. A missing measurement is not zero demand. The full rules are in what prompt volume means and prompts and topics.
How should you use prompt volume when choosing prompts to track?
Use volume to rank topics, then let the real answers decide. A practical order:
- 1. Start with buyer questions. Collect the questions your sales team hears, your site search terms and the words buyers use in reviews.
- 2. Group them into topics. A topic is how a buyer names what they shop for, in 2 to 4 words, such as "sunscreen for oily skin".
- 3. Read volume per topic. Use it to choose which topics to cover first, not to pick one wording of a question over another.
- 4. Keep narrow buying questions. A question with a budget or a city may show little volume, yet it can be the one a ready buyer asks.
- 5. Compare like with like. Compare figures from one tool, in one market and one month. Scales differ between tools.
- 6. Check the answers. Track the questions and see which answers name rivals and not you. The prompts and topics guide covers choosing prompts and counting slots.
What can prompt volume not tell you?
Prompt volume is about demand. It says nothing about what the AI answers. These questions need the answers themselves:
- Whether AI names you: a topic can have high volume while every answer names a rival. That is measured from the answers, with AI visibility tracking.
- What the AI searched for: the searches an AI runs behind an answer are a different signal. See query fan-out.
- How the AI describes you: tone comes from the answer text. See AI brand sentiment.
- Visits and sales: a volume figure is not a visit or an order. Depra AI does not track AI referral traffic or sales either.
- Your market: coverage differs by tool. Profound’s Prompt Volumes lists 10 countries, and India is not one of them (Profound, Prompt Volumes, checked 15 Oct 2026). Check the country list before you rely on a figure for India.
What does Depra AI track beyond prompt volume?
Depra AI asks your tracked questions to four AI engines from inside the country you sell in, and stores every full answer. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews are checked daily on every plan. Perplexity is checked weekly on Starter, Growth and Scale, and daily on Enterprise. Microsoft Copilot, Claude, Google AI Mode and other models are available on Enterprise as add-ons, set up by the Depra AI team.
For each answer you see whether your brand is named, its position and tone, and which websites are cited. For ChatGPT answers, Depra AI also stores the web searches ChatGPT ran. The method is on how Depra AI measures, and the wider plan is in GEO best practices.
To see which engines name you today, run the free AI audit. Plans start at ₹1,999 a month plus GST, with 7 days free on Starter, Growth and Scale, no card needed (Depra AI pricing). Or book a demo, a free 15-minute call where the Depra AI team sets up your project with you.
